The Precursors of our Contemporary Urban Legends

Did I mention that I love this ‘Book of Scary Urban Legends’? I probably did. Because I love it. The book starts with an overall introduction, and then each chapter starts with an introduction to another category of legends. Not only that, but the first one is about old ghost stories.

There was one story that Mr Skeleton found very unsettling! A woman has a nightmare-vision in which a coachman tells her that “There is room for one more!”. After a few repetitions, she goes to see her doctor who has an office on the eighteenth floor of a modern medical centre. The doctor reassures her that nothing is wrong with her, so she leaves to take the lift down. The lift is very crowded and she sees the coachman himself who says “There is room for one more!”. Terrified, she does not step in. A moment later the building shook with a terrific crash. The elevator that had gone on without her broke loose from its cables and plunged eighteen stories to the ground. Everybody in it, of course, was crushed to a pulp.
