Research thoughts…

I’ve had a busy Monday with meetings and especially with research. It’s Reading Week this week, so I’m hoping to finish my essay by the end. If not, at least I want to finish my reading and then just take a couple of days to write it.

My focus today was to find some sort of evidence to back me up in saying that young people are often marginalised simply because they are young. I’ve had people telling me that I’m too young and don’t have enough experience. I know people who’ve had other ‘adults’ tell them that they’re irresponsible or lazy because they’re young. I’m sure you can also think of some examples (let me know in the comments!).

Academic literature seems to have a way of avoiding to address this. Instead, they briefly mention something along the lines of ‘young people have been portrayed as [insert negative word], BUT here is the reality’. This is fair enough and I’ll be doing pretty much the same thing in my essay - young people are marginalised because society has these stereotypes, BUT if you observe them in practice… However, analysing the common discourse around youth would make a really interesting piece of research. I’ll see what assignments I have in the second term.
