Note to self: social media is nothing like it used to be

Not. At. All. Is this a good thing? Is this a bad thing? Not really. It’s just that social media has changed so much since I started doing DEIS’s PR back in 2017. If back then, we would stand out thanks to our youth-ish and friendly voice, today all ads are trying to sound exactly like that. We used Facebook to communicate with everyone, Tumblr to express our deepest thoughts, and Instagram to show our cool pics. Now there’s Instagram. And TikTok.

Why am I talking about all of these? Because today I held a small social media workshop with three volunteers from DEIS Ro. I’ve put my slides together, but I knew that… I don’t know much about social media anymore. This was as much a learning experience for me as it was for the girls. I’m no social media expert, I’m just someone who can write good posts for people her own age. I took my bits of knowledge and added ideas from the new generation - the basic idea behind posts is still getting people’s attention and all that, but what young people respond to has shifted completely. Maya, Dora, Teo, thank you for an amazing lesson today!

Also, I gave in. I have a TikTok account now - @bsideblog. I don’t know yet what or when I will post, but I really want to try it.
