Her Dark Wings - 5 ššššš out of 5.
I absolutely loved this book!!!
So much, in fact, that I asked @jeanine.celine to take a super bookstagram-ish picture of it.
Her Dark Wings is a modern-day retelling of the Persephone myth. An excellent retelling.
My favourite thing about it is the teenage experience - being 17/18, starting to build you own life and discovering who you are, only to find yourself away from your family and with a completely new group of friends. Teenage and young adulthood come with drama, anger, depression, loss, hopelessness. There's so much confusion. Until, one morning, you wake up and you realise that you've finally found your place and you're happy.
I must admit, this book hit a soft spot. Two, actually. Growing up plus drifting away from your childhood best friend. It hurts like a... Fury... for a while, but the wound heals in time.
What I also enjoyed was the focus on Corey. This is her story. It's not about some romance or friendship, it's not about some drama, and it's not about some metaphorical adventure. It's got all of those, but it's not ABOUT them.
I also appreciated how Hades was portrayed. No spoilers, just a moment of appreciation for one of my favourite Greek Gods. I've got Apollo's lyre tattooed on my back, maybe I should do something for Hades too.
I've got to buy Melinda Salisbury's other books. I need them all in my life.
In real bookstagram fashion, I shall rate this book ššššš out of 5.
(Can we please pretend that those are pomegranates?)
Dear Melinda,
Thank you! Thank you for showing youth as it really is and thank you for writing these fabulous books!
