Lucy slammed the door of her bedroom. Her life was flipped upside down when her Mum decided to quit her HR job and become a full-time housewife.

Before she could turn on the light, she heard a faint whisper. Lucy stood frozen. She was being watched. Two red eyes were looking right into her soul. The room felt suddenly cold.

She heard footsteps approaching in the hallway. ‘Mum’, Lucy thought. She would come to open the door and this nightmare would be over. But instead of the screech of an open door, she heard a key turning.

The vampire stepped closer to her. His skin was shining as he stepped into the strip of moonlight coming into the room from underneath the curtains. She relaxed when she noticed it was Jackson.

She approached him, looking into his eyes, feeling herself melt in his hug. He gave her a small box. Inside was the most delicate necklace with a red, heart-shaped stone. It was shining bright in the moonlight. They started kissing passionately.

Jackson suddenly remembered Angela. It felt like an eternity ago. After the Great War life changed. Returning home from the front, men felt as if they were the kings of the world. Some men, at least. The others were never the same.

It happened on the night he asked Angela to be his wife. He was pouring a drink - so innocent, so stupid - when he heard a scream coming from their room. He ran upstairs to see the windows flung open and his soon-to-be wife lying in a pool of blood.

‘Lucy’, Jackson whispered, ‘this necklace will keep you safe. It will shine whenever I’m around. If it ever stops shining, you know where the Allicin weapon is’. Jackson opened the window and flew away leaving nothing behind but a white residue from the engine of his jetpack.
