Starting the year my way - slippers and books
It’s said that you shouldn’t enter a new year with unfinished business. It will come and haunt you. That’s precisely why I do NOT want to finish books on the 31st of December, to ensure that reading will follow me into the new year.
After reading (over) 50 books in 2022, I set my 2023 goal lower, at 30. I’m not studying English Lit anymore, so I won’t have to speed-run through books from now on. I’m also reading plenty of articles or book chapters for my MA and I can’t keep track of those on Goodreads. Of course, this doesn’t mean I can’t or won’t try to exceed that goal.
The unfinished books I brought into the new year are Stephen King’s ‘IT’ and David Graeber’s ‘The Democracy Project’ (on my phone). For someone who isn’t very fond of clowns, ‘IT’ is definitely a challenge - IT’s already making me more uncomfortable than any other piece of horror lit that I’ve ever read. I like that.
‘The Democracy Project’ is a really good non-fiction read. Graeber has a super accessible style of writing and he explains things very well, contextualising real-life and theory/analysis. I bought it on Google Books with credit earned through Google Opinion Rewards. It’s about the #OccupyWallStreet movement, written by an anthropologist who also taught at Goldsmiths Uni. It’s also helping me learn more about horizontal management and anarchy, topics that I’ve become more interested in lately.
