4. “The Other Wise Man” by Henry van Dyke

I present to you… Rain-Duck in the role of The Other Wise Man. As well as a collection of short stories I started reading last night and I am pretty sure I will finish it a lot sooner than expected.

I read 3 out of the 5 short stories in Denis Johnson’s ‘The Largesse of the Sea Maiden'. Comparing this to David Foster Wallace or Zadie Smith sounds like a good essay idea. However, there is one more book I have to read for this module and the title and synopsis sound amazing, so I can’t make a decision yet.

Ever since I remember, I was fascinated by the stories of Jesus’s birth and death. I remember a beautiful Carol my Mum used to sing about the whole Natality Story from the visit of Shepherds and the Three Magi to the Escape to Egypt. What I also love are retellings of these legends, if I may call them that. Some of my favourite books are such retellings. This is the story of the Other Magian (Wise Man), the one who had to sacrifice his gifts in order to help others and never completed his quest but did something much more valuable.
