18. ‘The Fir-Tree’ by Hans Christian Andersen

Buying a (real) tree together was part of Christmas with my parents every year. It was a bit sad to see all those cut trees, but it was a nice family moment. We always ensured that the Tree feels happy and festive during its time with us, but unfortunately, we couldn’t keep it forever.

Here, in London, we have a fake tree. It saves a real tree and it lasts for years, but it’s still made of plastic. There is, however, one tree that I think would be the best of both worlds. When I was in Salzburg many years ago, I bought these little wooden trees (this is J’s, mine is in Romania). I don’t know what it’s made of, but I hope it was once a tall Christmas tree in someone’s house. One day I hope to have a bigger version of this tiny tree.

I know this story! And I always loved it. There was a cartoon with Andersen's stories and this was one of my favourite episodes. Maybe this is one of the experiences that planted in my head the idea that I need to appreciate the present. I always feel sorry for the little fir-tree, but I'm also glad that it understood the moments when he was truly happy by the end. A little too late, however… :(
