17. ‘The Christmas Banquet’ by Nathaniel Hawthorne

GIFT & PRIZE DAY!

Santa Express arrived with gifts from home and left with gifts for home. I am alone at the time of writing and haven’t opened anything yet, but I will soon when J and V arrive (some gifts today, others on Christmas Eve).

I also won something today! Our Lit&Pub seminar was turned into a quiz and the prize was the brand new Amanda Gorman collection - it came out exactly 10 days ago - which is on the reading list for this module at the end of next term. There are two types of books that make you a literature snob: very old and very new books. I feel very posh right now, thank you!

I read Hawthorne before ('The Scarlet Letter') and enjoyed his writing a lot. I enjoyed this story too. It's slightly more complex and philosophical than what you would usually expect from a Christmas story, but it touches on one very important topic: mental health, and especially depression (despite having everything you ever needed).
