11. ‘Nutcracker and Mouse King’ by E.T.A. Hoffmann

Christmas may be near, but I still have to work on my dissertation so today I finally went back to the British Library. It was a very productive session. I wrote the framework for my first chapter and I found a few interesting secondary sources about Joyce - no, they’re still not about youth and writing, but I can work my way around.

When I got back home, two Nutcrackers were guarding my shoes!

I adored this! As a very creative child, who lived in an imaginary world and who strongly believed that her toys were all alive, but placed under a wicked curse, this was my story. Reading it, I was Maria and I was once again a kid at Christmas, with new toys, with new stories. Allow yourself to be part of this story. It's such a beautiful experience.

However, I need to say, the ending felt quite... inappropriate for me, at least 🤷‍♀️. But it’s a story from 1853 so it’s quite surprising that is the only major issue.
